The global hearing aid market is a multi-billion dollar industry. Although this industry is lucrative, market penetration is very low, primarily due to high cost and the stigma associated with hearing aids. These barriers limit the number of users that could benefit from hearing assistance technologies. Mayo Clinic investigators have developed a low-cost, non-invasive hearing solution that can be utilized as a stand-alone device, or in combination with hearing aids. The HearHook is a small over-ear device, designed to selectively amplify speech over ambient noise. This technology is also equipped to address concerns involving critical distance, room reverberation and signal to noise interference. The HearHook technology has the potential to disrupt a multi-billion dollar market, through its use as an alternative to hearing aids or to enhance speech intelligibility when used in concert with existing devices.
