A 12 gene-panel is described capable of predicting whether an induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell line will have high or low cardiogenic potential upon in vitro differentiation. By comparing microarray data from high-cardiogenic versus low-cardiogenic lines, a discrete panel of genes was extracted and validated in 18 undifferentiated mouse iPS lines. Using PCR for these 12 genes from pluripotent samples and calculating the corresponding cardiogenic score would enable selection of the lines with highest innate potential for cardiomyocyte differentiation bypassing the need for time-consuming differentiation assays.
