Novel Techniques to Improve Efficacy and Decrease Complications with Lead Extraction

Technology #2012-132

Extraction of implanted cardiac leads is being increasingly required because of infection, lead malfunction, and a reflection of the increasing number of patients requiring cardiac devices. Present devices that use either laser extraction or radiofrequency-based approaches do not have a method to guide them so as to follow the course of the implanted leads, and thus inadvertent energy delivery into the vasculature occurs, giving rise to perforation and sometimes increased mortality.
