Many attempts have been made to replace circumferential segments of the esophagus with tubular prostheses of various materials, but experimental and clinical trials have not been successful due to frequent complications. An artificial esophageal replacement device which aims to overcome the problems of the previous attempts. Development of viable esophageal replacement would dramatically improve quality of life for esophageal atresia patients and esophageal cancer patients.
