Strategic Advantage of Semantic Analysis of Medical Resources (SAMR)

Technology #2011-154

The purpose of SAMR is to help clinicians find answers to clinical questions. The medical literature needed to correctly treat a patient grows exponentially. Data shows that both health care institutions and individual physicians are overwhelmed trying to incorporate this new knowledge. SAMR is a tool that could bridge this gap to improve patient care. SAMR uses semantic elements, the meaning of words, in a clinician’s question to mathematically score the relationship between the question and all possible answers. The top scoring answers are selected from evidence based resources such as clinical guidelines, textbooks or medical journals. A leading technical advantage of SAMR over common medical search strategies is that SAMR does not depend on tagging documents which reduces preprocessing time.
